  • Description

With the railways and several other industries already effected, in the growing labour unrest in France, a strike by lightermen in the Paris region, June 7, has stopped all canal transport in that area. The great canal system in and around Paris carries a considerable percentage of the payloads going to the industrial areas outside the city.

Along the banks of the large canals such as the St. Martin and the St. Denis, empty barges are lying idle. The dispute is over the wage stabilization plan, which was introduced in France last year.

The dissatisfaction among the workers has spread to the three major unions concerned with water traffic. Canal locks are out of operation with the lock keepers also demanding a wage increase.

A call has gone out to millions of public service workers to support a nation-wide strike due to take place June 10. If effective the French public transport system will almost be at a standstill.
