The large bridge at Batheay, which is usually the only link between the northeastern district and Phnom Penh the capital, has been badly damaged for the past month, and the refuges made use of sampans, to ferry themselves and belongings across the river. Colonel Littaye Suon supervised the operation....he's the Governor of the Kompong Cham Province, and Commander of the troops in the area.

Although the troops, like the families, were pulling out of the district because of the increasing strength of communist units in nearby strongholds. Colonel Littaye Suon has predicted a return of government forces within the next few days. He gave no indication, however, that South Vietnamese units would be called in at present to help out west of the Mekong River.

The Batheay refugees with their belonging were assisted up the steep banks and hillside....some to lorries which would carry their heavy bundles.

Colonel Littaye Suon has said that net only would his troops be counter-attacking along Highway Six very soon, but the they would also shortly join South Vietnamese troops at Tonle Bet, east of the Mekong, for drivers against the communist strongholds.
