In the Batheay district of the Khmer Republic on Friday (3 December government troops were helping local families evacuate the area as communist fores maintained nearby strongholds. The large bridge at Batheay has been badly damaged for a month. Colonel Littaye Suon, Governor of the Kompong Chem Province, and Commander of the Khmer forces in the areas, was present as his troops helped the families across the Mekong River by Sampan and up the steep banks. The bridge was the only link from the north-east to Phnom Penh.
SYNOPSIS: Families living in the Birthday district of the Khmer Republic, near the Mekong River, were evacuated on Friday with the help of Khmer Government troops. Among the troops were several girl soldiers.
The large bridge at Batheay, which is usually the only link between the northeastern district and Phnom Penh the capital, has been badly damaged for the past month, and the refuges made use of sampans, to ferry themselves and belongings across the river. Colonel Littaye Suon supervised the operation....he's the Governor of the Kompong Cham Province, and Commander of the troops in the area.
Although the troops, like the families, were pulling out of the district because of the increasing strength of communist units in nearby strongholds. Colonel Littaye Suon has predicted a return of government forces within the next few days. He gave no indication, however, that South Vietnamese units would be called in at present to help out west of the Mekong River.
The Batheay refugees with their belonging were assisted up the steep banks and hillside....some to lorries which would carry their heavy bundles.
Colonel Littaye Suon has said that net only would his troops be counter-attacking along Highway Six very soon, but the they would also shortly join South Vietnamese troops at Tonle Bet, east of the Mekong, for drivers against the communist strongholds.
