  • Description

The first major strike in the garment industry in New York for twenty-five years brought out 105,000 workers and put a stop to an industry that produces three-quarters of the dresses worn by American women.

Unlike the walk-outs in the industry during the inter-war years the only injuries sustained were caused when an elevator plunged into a basement when its brakes failed. Several garment workers were treated in hospital. The police force in New York, though, was on the alert and mounted police and patrol cars were strategically placed in the area where the garment industry is predominate.

The cause of the stoppage is the failure of certain employers to abide by their contracts to the labour force and the refusal of the employers as a whole to grant a package wage rise of 22 per cent. This includes a cash increase of 15 per cent and various conditions, such as overtime rates for piece rate workers after a 35 hour week.

The employers reply to this demand is that a package offer amounting to more than a 5 per cent increase in labour costs in impossible, although it has been rumoured that if the union were to scale its demand down to 10 or 12 per cent agreement might be achieved.

A mass meeting in Madison Gardens was organised yesterday and 28,000 workers turned up. They were addressed by their own union boss, Julius Hochman, and the president of the American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organisations, Mr.George Meany.

The Mayo of New York, Mr.Wagner, has written the union stating that if there is no agreement between the workers and the employers he will call a meeting of both sides at the City Hall for Friday, in an attempt to reach a satisfactory agreement.
