A POSTPONEMENT OF THE BURIAL OF QUANG DUC - THE BUDDHIST MONK WHO PUBLICLY BURNT HIMSELF TO DEATH IN SUPPORT OF RELIGIOUS DEMANDS - LED TO RIOTING IN SAIGON THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL, LAST SUNDAY.

A BUDDHIST PRIEST, STANDING ON THE TOP OF A VAN, ANNOUNCED THE POSTPONEMENT TO THE LARGE CROWD GATHERED FOR THE FUNERAL PROCESSION. THE MONK URGED THE CROWDS TO DISPERSE, BUT THEY BEGAN PUSHING THE VAN TOWARDS LOI PAGODA, IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS, WHERE THE BODY OF THE DEAD MONK LAY, AND THE PROCESSION HAD BEEN DUE TO START. POLICE CORDONS, ACROSS THE ROUTE TO THE LOI PAGODA, FAILED TO TURN BACK THE CROWD OF SEVERAL THOUSAND, AND RIOTING BROKE OUT. IT IS REPORTED THAT AT LEAST 30 POLICEMEN WERE INJURED AND ONE MAN KILLED. RIOT SQUADS AND MILITARY POLICE FINALLY CLEARED THE STREETS, AND ALL WAS QUIET BY THE AFTERNOON. BURIAL FOR QUANG DUC IS NOW SET FOR TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY.

MEANWHILE IN LOI PAGODA, THE CITY'S PRINCIPAL BUDDHIST TEMPLE, SERVICES OF THE DEAD MONK, WHOSE COFFIN IS IN FRONT OF THE ALTAR, ARE HELD CONTINUOUSLY.

SUNDAY'S RIOT CAME A FEW HOURS AFTER THE GOVERNMENT AND BUDDHIST LEADERS HAD REACHED AGREEMENT ON A SETTLEMENT. A BUDDHIST SPOKESMAN SAID HE BELIEVED THAT THE BUDDHISTS HAD OBTAINED 80 PER CENT SATISFACTION IN THEIR DEMANDS - ENDING THE FIVE-WEEK OLD DISPUTE.
