    SOME 1,500 STUDENTS FROM SINGAPORE UNIVERSITY STAGED A DEMONSTRATION YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT'S PRACTICE OF ISSUING SUITABILITY CERTIFICATES TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS WERE TO HAVE MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY STREETS, BUT POLICE REFUSED THEM A PERMIT, SO THE DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS.

    PLACARDS AND BANNERS IN ENGLISH, CHINESE AND MALAY URGED THE STUDENTS TO OPPOSE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEE KUAN YEW, AND TO "FIGHT FOR ACADEMIC FREEDOM."
    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS LED BY OFFICIALS OF THE SINGAPORE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' UNION. UNION LEADERS ARE TO DEBATE THE ISSUE WITH MR. LEE ON 24 OCTOBER.
