Background: Trouble in Hebron started when, according to the Jewish Qiryat Arba settlers, they found last night the ceremonial curtain of the Holy Arch in the Jewish part of the Tomb of the Patriarchs torn and when this morning according to the Mayor of Hebron, the Sheikh of the Mosque in the Tomb of the patriarchs found Islamic prayerbooks and apparently a jar thrown onto the floor, a perpetration supposedly executed by Qiryat Arba settlers this morning. The mayor and several notables refused to move from the mosque until DefMin Peres or one of his representatives came to see what happened and Gen. Hagoel came and saw and promised that the entire incident would be investigated immediately. In the meantime Waqf representatives (moslem Religious Council) briefed mayors and council heads of towns and villages in the Hebron area of what had happened in the forecourt of the Tomb of the Patriarchs.- In order to facilitate the police investigation, security forces imposed a curfew on the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the immediate surroundings, including the Suq and parts of the Kasbah. The Mayor of Hebron next called a meeting of all the notables in his office at the Municipality and they issued a statement of the facts as they saw them, demanding that the culprits be punished.
