  • Description

President Hafez al-Assad voted in public on Monday (12 March) when Syrians took part in a plebiscite to say whether they approved plans for a new constitution. The poll resulted in 2,085,261 "yes" votes -- 97.6 per cent of the electorate. Only 46,825 people voted "no" and 3,221 ballot papers were spoilt.

The President voted at a school in Damascus. There were 6,000 polling stations, including mobile unite which took ballot boxes to hospital patients, army garrisons and even the encampments of wandering Bedouin.

The new constitution is Syria's first in 12 years. It includes a provision for general elections to be held within 90 days. The 157-article constitution was described by Interior Minister, Ali Zaza, as "An historic and effective step towards a secure and stable future."
