  • Description

World cup soccer ... and in a furious and exciting game in Buenos Aires on Tuesday (June 6) Argentina joined Italy in the last eight of the tournament with a 2-1 victory over France.

SYNOPSIS: The action was fast and furious from the kick-off with Argentina outclassing their French opponents. This shot by Osvaldo Ardiles was narrowly saved by the French goalkeeper Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes.

The French defence was in trouble from three men - Mario Kempes, rene Houseman and Leopoldo Luque and only luck and the skill of Bertrand-Demanes kept the goals away. A shot from Kempes miraculously rebounded from the post and was cleared.

Right on half time, Argentina was awarded a penalty - and daniel Passarella made no mistake in scoring.

A shot by Daniel Valencia early in the second half was well saved by Bertrand-Demanes, but he fell against the goal post and was carried off injured.

He was replaced by Dominique Baratelli. It should have demoralised France, but they came back with an equalising goal from Michel Platini.

France sustained their attack and minutes later Didier Six, their untiring left-winger, burst through the centre - only to see his shot beat Ubaldo Filliol and then sail wide of the goalmouth.

After 72 minutes Oscar Ortiz came on for the injured Norberto Alonso. Ortiz made his mark immediately with a cross straight to Luque who slammed the ball home for the winning goal.

Even then, Argentina did not have it all their own way. Filliol was lucky to get to this power house shot from Didier Six. Argentina were due to play Italy on Saturday (June 10).
