Coventry Cathedral was a big attraction for the Russians who are spending ten days in Britain.Mr.John Dunkerley, the B.B.C.'s Midland regional controller welcomed His Excellency, Mr.M.A.Kharlamov, chairman of the state committee of the council of ministers of the Soviet Union for Broadcasting and television.The party was shown round the cathedral by the Provost of Coventry, the Very Reverend Harold Williams.Several of them were carrying cine-cameras and they'll be taking film back to Russia of the ruins of the old Cathedral and of Coventry's city centre, the shopping precinct built on the ruins of the blitz, that has attracted the attention of town planners from all over the world.
This afternoon the Russian visitors were shown round the B.B.C.'s regional television studio at Gosta Green in Birmingham.They met senior members of the B.B.C.staff and watched a tele-recording of the programme "Meeting Point" dealing with the life and work of Coventry Cathedral in its first year.Tomorrow they're going to Oxford where they will be met by the Director General of the B.B.C., Mr.Hugh Carleton Green.
The Russian radio and television delegation, visiting this country spent the day in the Midlands.
