  • Description

Each year, Nepalese women celebrate "Teej", or "Womens' Day", a colourful festival when huge congregations of gaily dressed ladies flock to the temples to worship Lord Shiva - held to be the ideal husband by Eindu women. In Katmandu and the surrounding hills August 24/25 thousands of women participated in the 2-day celebration.

Streaming through the streets to the Temple of Pashupatinath, guardian deity of Nepal, the women, dancing and singing, bought sacred marks for their foreheads from local beggars and placed them on each other.

After traditional dancing in front of the temple, the women entered - completely unescorted by men - to pray to Lord Pashupatinath, also known as Lord Shiva. Wives pray for the eternal love of their husband and unmarried girls worship in the hope of an ideal husband.
