  • Description

Kailan Colliery is built on extremely rich coal seams in North China
Opened in 1877, Kailan Colliery was one of the earliest mines in China to adopt modern methods of excavating coal.

In early 20th century, this colliery was seized by British imperialism and subjected to the long and tortuous years of ruthless plunder by imperialism and bureaucratic capitalists of the Kuomingtang.

In the 17 years since liberation the Chinese people have succeeded in making this once desolate coal pit into a highly mechanized and partially automatized enterprise. Its yearly output has increased many times as compared with the peak output when the mine was owned by imperialists. Many veteran miners have been promoted to leading positions to meet the needs of China's growing and developing coal industry. Ma Ching Kung, for example, has become Vice-Director of Ling Hsi Mine of the colliery.

Hu Chang-hai, national advanced coal miner, is deputy to the National People's Congress. Like coal mines elsewhere in China, the leadership of Kailan colliery pays priority attention to the miners' safety. The coal pits are complete with safety devices while a host of measures ensure the health of the miners after they emerge from the mines. They have physical check-ups regularly and enjoy free medical care and convalescence.

The miners' club offers a diverse program of cultural activities.

This is a typical miner's home. A life of affluence has been secured for Ki Teh, a veteran miner and his family.
