THE OILMEN -- 24 ITALIANS, THREE WEST GERMANS, A LEBANESE AND A JORDANIAN -- ALL WORKED FOR THE ITALIAN OIL COMPANY, ENI.

    WITH SIGNOR PEDINI AND PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY WAS THE ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE IVORY COAST.

    ON MONDAY, THE GOVERNMENT OF THE MID-WEST REGION OF FEDERAL NIGERIA ANNOUNCED THAT, ACCORDING TO AN EYE-WITNESS, 11 EUROPEAN OILMEN HAD BEEN KILLED BY SECESSIONIST FORCES IN A RAID ON THEIR CAMP ON THE NIGER RIVER NEAR KWALE. A STATEMENT FROM THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENT QUOTED THE UNIDENTIFIED EYE-WITNESS AS SAYING THAT SECESSIONIST TROOPS OPENED FIRE ON A CARAVAN HOUSING THE MEN IN THE ATTACK MORE THAN TWO WEEKS AGO.

    THE REMAINING 18 OILMEN WERE REPORTEDLY BEING HELD PRISONERS BY THE BIAFRANS.

    PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY IS UNDERSTOOD TO BE IN CONTACT WITH THE BIAFRAN AUTHORITIES AND WORKING FOR THE RELEASE OF THE OILMEN.
