  • Description

The first South African Bantustan, or homeland, to become independent, is the Transkei -- on Monday night (25 October)
SYNOPSIS: At two minutes to midnight, the Transkei flag of white and green stripes will be unfurled and the firing of a one hundred and one gun salute will mark the emergence of a Xhosa nation. But the state will be largely unrecognised by the world at large because it is the product of South Africa's apartheid policy. After independence, all Xhosas in South Africa will have been declared foreigners.

The Xhosas will not be forced to go to Transkei, but will be treated as foreigners in South Africa. However, the new Prime Minister, Chief Kaiser Matanzime, is optimistic about the future.
