  • Description

We filmed in an area in South East Lebanon known as 'The Triangle' (formed by three towns -- Yanta, Deir el Aachayar and Rachaya) which trusts into Syrian territory (see map). This area is traditionally controlled by Palestinian Commandos (estimated officially by the army at around 1,500). Over the last two weeks, while Beirut erupted and remained at an uneasy peace, the army has been strongly re-inforced in this area. Hit-and-run attacks by Palestinian units were commonplace (quite now) and on the night of 8/2 the old 'foreign Legion' fort at Rachaya and several outposts nearby were heavily attacked (see film...long shot of fort on bill with houses below and good footage of outpost where two Lebanese army soldiers died). Tension in the area has been heightened by Syrian bellicose statements and Lebanese fears that Syrian army units might have taken the opportunity to sweep in over the board (border along hilltops shown in longshots....Damascus only about 40 kilometres away from point of filming). Also fears that the Syrian-based Palestinian 'Saiga' unite might also have swept over the border. Although only sporadic sniper fire now reported, these fears still very strong locally; the army is on constant alert and local towns and villages are all-but deserted (see film of Rachaya town). Some damage to civilian homes (see film) and military fortifications.

Although N.A. has the ONLY military pass allowing him to film army activities, local units were so nervous that we were restricted to minimum coverage. Throughout our filming at the outpost we wore being watched by Palestinian 'elements' on the hilltops with binoculars. Every few kilometres on the road leading North to Beirut for a distance of about 15 kilometres from the area the army bad established heavily-armed roadblocks (tanks, heavy machine-guns and armoured troop-carriers).

The employed cutting (sorry, no time for translation) gives a After the recent fightings in the Triangle of Yanta, Deir el Achaer and Rachaya al Wadi the situation remains tense at this point near the syria lebanese border. In the night between the 8th and 9th of May heavy armed elements forces attacked the french legion type fort of Rachaya and near by army posts using 120mm mortars. The lebanese army had orders to reply the fire only after 15 minutes in order to seek a cease fire. Passed this period the army fired back repulsing the attackers. Joint committees army-commando have been also settled in this area. Film shows:
