  • Description

The current wave of hi-jack attempts by Arab guerrilla organisations has tended to focus attention away from the actual Middle East ceasefire and the activity along the borders between Israel and surrounding Arab states. Israeli troops on the Jordanian frontier maintain regular patrols, but they are able to relax for some of the time.

For the Israeli soldiers, it's a time of relative peace. But the motions of war have to be pursued. Daily searches of the dirt roads are carried out to test whether mines have been planted by terrorist groups. Arms have to be kept clean and ready for instant use, lookouts posted and the frontier patrolled at all times.

For the regular armies of both sides, the ceasefire is a reality. But the guerrillas never accepted the ceasefire, and their activities are a constant threat to the entrenched Israeli soldiers.

When they're not required for patrols, they play cards, read newspapers and listen to the radio. Officially, they're not at war. But it's a strange sort of peace.
