  • Description

Governor George Wallace of Alabama is drawing large crowds in his campaign to win the Michigan Democratic Presidential primary due to be held on May 16 with rallies that are a combination of political revival meetings and country music hoedowns.

Wallace's campaign is fuelled by an emotionally intense aspect of the desegregation issue -- bussing. But hi popularity in Michigan is also based on current dissatisfaction in the state (and elsewhere) with the high levels of taxation and low levels of public services.

And with the rest of the vote split between Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, Shirley Chisholm and Henry Jackson, many political observers are forecasting that Wallace will win the primary by about 40 per cent.

A victory in Michigan would be Wallace's first in the northern states.
