Background: Accompanied by a Sovereign's escort of the Household Cavalry, April 6, President and Madame De Gaulle - on day-two of their four-day State visit - drove in an open carriage through London's streets from Buckingham Palace to the Guildhall and a luncheon arranged in the French President's honour by the Lord Mayor, Sir Edmund Stockdale.

After inspecting a guard of honour comprised of ceremonial pikemen and modern infantry troops of the Honourable Artillery Company, the President was escorted into the Guildhall library where, before a formal sitting of the City of London's Court of Common Council, he replied to a Presentation of Address before going into luncheon in the ornate Egyptian Hall.

Other functions on his day-two itinerary included a Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace; visits to the war-time Free French headquarters in Carlton Gardens and the French Hospital in Shaftesbury Avenue; an Anglo-French Society reception at Lancaster House; followed by a reception at the French Embassy attended by her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip.
