INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL WORKERS IN AND AROUND THE CITY HAD BEEN CALLED OUT ON 24-HOUR STRIKE BY THE JOINT ACTION OF UNIONS OPPOSED TO ITALY'S NEW GOVERNMENT, CALLING FOR HIGHER PAY AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS.

    THE MARCH WOUND THROUGH THE CITY FROM THE MAIN RAILWAY STATION TO THE COLISEUM, WHERE THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE ADDRESSED BY UNION LEADERS.

    FIFTEEN HUNDRED PEOPLE STOOD BY WHILE THE MARCH PROGRESSED, BUT NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED, ALTHOUGH TRAFFIC IN THE CENTRE OF THE CAPITAL WAS AT A STANDSTILL FOR SOME HOURS.
