  • Description

An arms dump discovered in the Turkish quarter of Nicosia was blown up by security forces this afternoon because the explosives were too dangerous to move. The arms, which included 10 bombs, had been hidden in a disused iron foundry.

This is in a small building between a Turkish garage and a Greek-owned foundry. Both Greeks and Turks work at the foundry and Left-wing elements operate in the area.

It has therefore been almost impossible for the authorities to decide whether EOKA, the Greek-Cyprict terrorist organization, Turks or Left-wing adherents hid the bombs in the foundry. The police are continuing investigations and men being questioned in an attempt to discover which organisation might have been responsible.

Major Harrison of the R.A.O.C. seconded to the Cyprus Government as an explosive expert, made the decision to blow up the dump. Sandbags were used to confine the effect of the explosion to the outbuildings. The streets were cleared for a radius of half a mile.
