  • Description

The United Nations Security Council debate on the occupied territories resumed on Thursday (20 May), with Pakistan calling for a peace based on justice, and Egypt again accusing Israel of "using Nazi tactics" on the West Bank of the Jordan.

Pakistan's Ambassador, Iqbal Akhund, called on the Council to condemn changes made by the Israelis in the physical, cultural and demographic character of the occupied territories. He also said Israel's policy on Jewish settlement on the West Bank should be reversed.

In his speech, Egyptian Ambassador, Ahmed Meguid, said it was becoming more apparent every day that Israel held the Security Council and world opinion in contempt.

He said the continuing use of Nazi tactics and measures was the order of the day for the Israelis, and that the shooting of a young Arab girl, the erecting of gates in Nablus and the closing down of Arab newspapers were all part of an Israeli policy to exterminate the rightful inhabitants of the West Bank.

Wary of a possible United States veto, the Council members considered issuing a consensus statement instead of passing a formal resolution on Israel's treatment of captured Arab territories, on Thursday.
