Background: Although beaten in the boxing by the United States, the R.A.F. won the Britannia Shield for the first time for two years, at the Empire Pool. Wembley, October 29.
The Britannia Shield, introduced to commemorate the spirit that was born during the Battle of Britain, is a four-part sporting contest - a peace-time composition for the wartime Allies.
R.A.F finished second to U.S.A. in the boxing but their fencers, swimmers and pistol men enabled them to win the shield with 80 points.
Runners-up were the Netherlands (last year's winner) with 77 and Belgium (third) with 70.
