  • Description

The Lebanese Chamber of Deputies, or Parliament, elected a new speaker on Tuesday (19 October).

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was held in the town of Shtoura, which is in the area of Lebanon controlled by the Syrian army. As the members of the Chamber of Deputies arrived they were guarded by Syrian troops and members of the right-wing Taala' Lebanese Army. Syria supports the right-wing Christian forces in the Lebanese civil war.

The parliamentarians met the day after a Saudi Arabian meeting between the leaders of Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, kuwait, Lebanon and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) agreed in Riyadh on a plan to end the 18-month-old Lebanese civil war.

The members who attended the Shtoura meeting on Tuesday elected Mr. Kamal Assad as the new President, or speaker, of the Chamber. Mr. Assad, a right-wing Moslem, has previously held the post.
