    Background: WELSH WORKERS STAGED A PROTEST MARCH IN LONDON YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE CLOSURE OF RAILWAYS AND MINES. AT PADDINGTON STATION, A BRASS-BAND HEADED THE COLUMN OF NEARLY 1,000 MARCHERS.

    SEVEN HUNDRED-MANY OF THEM MINERS FROM THE VALLEYS OF SOUTH WALES - HAD COME TO THE CAPITAL BY SPECIAL TRAIN. IN LONDON, THEY WERE JOINED BY TRADE UNIONISTS FROM OTHER AREAS FOR WHAT THE ORGANISERS CALLED "A NATIONAL PILGRIMAGE".

    THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE WEST END BEFORE GOING ON TO PARLIAMENT TO LOBBY M.Ps. THEY WERE ARMED WITH BANNERS AND PLACARDS. REPRESENTATIVES FROM 140 PITS TOOK PART IN THE PROCESSION. A MINERS' LEADER SAID: "IT'S WORK WE WANT, NOT A RETURN TO THE DEPRESSION."
