    The heads of Argentina's three armed services, who overthrew President Maria Estela Peron on Wednesday (24 March) have been sworn in as the nation's ruling junta.

    The immediately announced they were dissolving congress and suspending all political parties and labour unions.

    The 45-year old president was arrested at the municipal airport in Buenos Aires shortly after 1 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday and flown to house arrest at a winter resort in the foothills of the Andes.

    She had apparently tried to flee the country as troops moved into the capital after occupying several cities in the interior.

    The coup d'etat followed weeks of rumours that a military take-over was imminent because of widespread political and economic chaos and growing political violence. Inflation is running at about 475 per cent a year.

    The armed forces commanders, Army chief Gorge Videla, Navy Commander Emilio Massera and Air Force chief Orlando Agosti were sworn in as the ruling junta.

    They were sworn in by Senor Jorge Allende, president of the College of Notaries of Buenos aires province.

    The commanders said their underlying aims would be to restore essential values to government and eliminate subversion, to make "the eventual establishment of a real and representative democracy" possible.

Mrs. Peron was arrested at the municipal airport and flown to house arrest at a winter resort in the Andes foothills.

    The three chiefs of the armed forces, including the army;s General Jorge Rafael Videla, have been sworn in as the country's ruling junta. Navy commander, Admiral Emilio Massera and the other members of the junta were sworn in by the president of the College of Notaries of Buenos Aires province, Senor Jorege Allende. The third member is Air Force Chief, Rolando Agosti. The three commanders said their aim would be to make the eventual establishment of a representative democracy possible.
