REPORTER: What distinguished this race was the way Ramsy Clarke handled his campaign, the former Attourney General under President Johnson ran what some would call an anti-establishment campaign.....

CLARKE: It's possible to run effectily without accepting big money.
REPORTER: In his previously successful runs for the senate, Jacob Javits somewhat proper run campaign, but this one proved brutal for both sides. Javits showed the effect last night, for it was Clarkes record rather than the ? which proved the major issue...
...Although Javits was forced into a T.V. campaign blitz as election day approached he would not admit that this wa his toughest race.
JAVITS: It was a hard fought campaign and I,m deeply gratified that the people won and knew my record and liked it, that they liked the fact I'm a Lively fellow now, and they had the feeling I'd be very lively in the future.
REPORTER: The Oyear old senator now goes back to washington for the 4th time.
