Background: IN SOUTH VIETNAM, THERE HAS BEEN MORE FIERCE FIGHTING BETWEEN SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT, AND VIETCONG TROOPS. IN THIS WAR, THE UNITED STATES IS LENDING MILITARY SUPPORT TO THE GOVERNMENT FORCES - AND ONE OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS HAS BEEN A FORCE OF SMALL SPOTTER AIRCRAFT. THESE AIRPLANES FLY OVER AREAS SUSPECTED TO BE HIDEOUTS OF THE VIETCONG. THEY MARK TARGETS, AND WATCH OUT FOR SIGNS OF SABOTAGE AGAINST RAILWAY TRACKS AND ROADWAYS. MEANWHILE, IN NORTH VIETNAM, WHERE UNITED STATES BOMBERS ARE STILL POUNDING MILITARY INSTALLATIONS, TWO CAPTURED AMERICAN PILOTS HAVE APPEARED. THEY WERE RECENTLY SHOWN AROUND AN EXHIBITION IN HANOI. THE EXHIBITION WAS ENTITLED "DEFEAT U.S. IMPERIALISM RESOLUTELY."
THE LIGHT, SINGLE-ENGINED, AIRCRAFT USED BY THE UNITED STATES ON ITS SPOTTER MISSIONS OVER SOUTH VIETNAM ARE OFFICIALLY KNOWN AS THE O-IF's. WHEN THEY DISCOVER WHAT THEY BELIEVE TO BE A VIETCONG INSTALLATION THEY MARK IT WITH SMOKE BOMBS. THIS MAKES THE POSITION CLEARLY VISIBLY FOR THE HELICOPTERS, OR AIR FORCE PLANES WHICH FOLLOW IT.

THE PILOTS USED IN THIS RECONNAISSANCE WORK ARE MEN OF CONSIDERABLE EXPERIENCE. GREAT SKILL IS NEEDED IN LOW-ALTITUDE WORK AMONG THE RUGGED HILLS OF SOUTH VIETNAM. AS WELL AS THE NATURAL HAZARDS, THERE IS ALWAYS THE DANGER OF GROUND FIRE WHICH CAN EASILY BRING THE AIRCRAFT DOWN.

TWO UNITED STATES AIRMEN, CAPTURED BY THE NORTH VIETNAMESE WHEN THEIR PLANES WERE SHOT DOWN DURING A BOMBING RAID ON NORTH VIETNAMESE INSTALLATIONS, APPEARED RECENTLY AT AN EXHIBITION IN HANOI, IN AN OFFICIAL DOPESHEET ACCOMPANYING THIS FILM, THE NORTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT CLAIMS THE TWO PILOTS ARE NOW IN BETTER HEALTH THAN WHEN CAPTURED.

AT THE EXHIBITION, THE TWO PILOTS WERE SHOWN PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY UNITED STATES BOMBERS DURING THEIR RAIDS ON NORTH VIETNAM. AMONG THE PICTURES AT THE EXHIBITION WERE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PILOTS' OWN AIRCRAFT. THE WRECKAGE OF ONE OF THE PLANES WAS ON DISPLAY OUTSIDE THE HALL WhERE THE EXHIBITION WAS HELD.

(AIRCRAFT OF THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE HAVE BEEN IN ACTION IN SEVERAL PLACES IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY 16 "THUNDERCHIEFS" ATTACKED AN AMMUNITION DUMP 45 MILES -- 72 KMS -- FROM HANOI. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE SEVERELY DAMAGED THE TARGET. U.S. JETS ALSO RESUMED THEIR ATTACK ON THE THANH HOA ROAD BRIDGE WHICH HAS BEEN HIT IN PREVIOUS RAIDS. AND IN SOUTH VIETNAM, AMERICAN AIRCRAFT FLEW TO THE AID OF BELEAGUERED SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE CHANGED THE TIDE OF A MAJOR BATTLE BY THEIR RELENTLESS POUNDING OF VIETCONG POSITIONS.)
