    Egypt has maintained silence on the visit of two senior United States officials who arrived in Cairo yesterday in an apparent attempt to revive flagging diplomatic efforts at solving the Middle East crisis. The State Department sent Mr. Donald Bergus, the chief United States representative in Cairo, and Mr. Michael Sterner, specialist on Egypt in the State Department, to inform Egypt of the United States' latest views about re-opening the Suez Canal. At what diplomatic level the talks will be conducted is unknown. Mr. Sterner is believed to be on good personal terms with President Sadat and accompanied him during his tour of the United States in 1964. Mr. Sterner also served with the American Embassy in Cairo in the early 1960's.

    SYNOPSIS: In an effort to revive its flagging diplomatic efforts at solving the Middle East crisis, the American State Department has sent Mr. Michael Sterner, an expert on Egypt, to Cairo with Mr. Donald Bergus, the chief United States representative in the Egyptian capital. Mr. Bergus has just completed a month's holiday in America. No Egyptians were at Cairo airport to meet the two Americans, but they were greeted by the Spanish Ambassador, who acts on behalf of the Americans. Egypt has remained silent on the visit. At what diplomatic level the talks will take place is still unknown, but Mr. Sterner is believed to be on good terms with President Anwar Sadat He accompanied the Egyptian leader during his tour of the United States in 1964. It's believed the two Americans want to tell the Egyptians of the United States' latest views about re-opening the Suez Canal. Observers say President Sadat might receive Mr. Sterner as a diplomatic gesture and also to voice his impatience at the ineffectiveness of the United States peace efforts.
