  • Description

162 people travelling in an All-Nippon Airways Boeing 727 from Sapporo to Tokyo on Friday died when the aircraft and an F-86 Sabre fighter of the Japanese Defence forces collided. The crash is considered the World's worst air disaster.

The pilot of the fighter, 22 year-old trainee pilot Yoshimi Ichikawa, is to be charged with professional negligence resulting in death, and also with violating air-traffic law.

The world's previous worst mid-air collision occurred on December 16, 1960, over Brooklyn, New York, when a United Airlines DC-8 carrying 84 people collided with a TWA Super Constellation with 44 people aboard. Together with those killed on the ground the total death toll was 136.

The Japanese crash was the second this month in flights originating from Sapporo. A domestic airliner crashed on July 3rd. Killing all 68 aboard.

This film of the search for bodies is from the Japanese NHK television service, and was satellited to Europe and telerecorded from the Eurovision Network.
