  • Description

Tough security precautions were laid on in Haarlem, The Netherlands, for Thursday's (30 May) trial of two Palestinian guerrillas who have admitted hijacking a British airliner and blowing it up at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. It's the first time 'skyjackers' have been tried in Western Europe.

The court buildings were described as being 'like a fort'. Marksmen were posted on neighbouring roofs. Nearby streets were cordoned off and some of them were blocked by armoured cars.

Only 30 Dutch and foreign journalists were allowed in to cover the trial, and they were thoroughly searched by steel-helmeted police.

These precautions followed a statement by the two defendants -- Sami Hussin Tamimi and Adnan Ahmad Nuri -- that they intended turning the hearing into a political trial. On 3 March, an aircraft on a flight from Beirut to London was hijacked; it was diverted to Amsterdam where the passengers were allowed to disembark and the aircraft was blown up.

The two Palestinians pleaded guilty on the first day of the trial. Sentence is expected to be passed on 6 June.
