  • Description

A TEAM OF FOUR DUTCH AVIATION EXPERTS FROM THE FOKKER AVIATION FIRM LEFT AMSTERDAM TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FOR INDONESIA. THEY WILL COMPLETE THE TECHNICAL DETAILS OF A DEAL IN WHICH INDONESIA IS EXPECTED TO BUY 20 FOKKER FRIENDSHIPS WORTH ABOUT GBP30 MILLION STERLING OR MORE.

THE DEAL, WHICH IS BEING NEGOTIATED ON A BARTER BASIS, HAS ALREADY RUN INTO DIFFICULTIES. THIS HAS BEEN DUE TO A BRITISH BAN ON THE EXPORT OF ROLLS ROYCE ENGINES FOR THE FRIENDSHIP - A MOVE TAKEN BECAUSE IT WAS FEARED IN BRITAIN THAT THE PLANES MIGHT BE USED BY INDONESIA FOR MILITARY PURPOSES.

SINCE THE MID-1950'S WHEN THE FIRST FOKKER CAME OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE, ROLLS ROYCE ENGINES HAVE BEEN USED. AND THEY HAVE BEEN FITTED TO ALL SUBSEQUENT MAKES OF THE F.27 FRIENDSHIP. IN FACT, ABOUT 30 PER CENT OF THE AIRCRAFT'S EQUIPMENT IS OF BRITISH MANUFACTURE.

BECAUSE OF THE BRITISH BAN, FOKKER IS NOW CONSIDERING PURCHASING ENGINES FROM FRANCE AND IF THE EMBARGO IS EXTENDED TO EQUIPMENT, IT MAY ALSO BUY COMPONENTS AND ELECTRONIC GEAR FROM THE FRENCH AS WELL.

THE INDONESIANS ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THE DEAL A STAGE FURTHER AND ARE HOPING TO OBTAIN ASSISTANCE TO ESTABLISH A PLANT IN INDONESIA TO MANUFACTURE FRIENDSHIPS AT THE RATE OF TWO A MONTH. THE DEAL WOULD THEN INVOLVE THE SUPPLY AND MANUFACTURE OF ABOUT 100 F.27'S BETWEEN NOW AND 1974.

OF THE INITIAL ORDER FOR 20 FRIENDSHIPS, THE FIRST IS TO GO INTO SERVICE WITH GARUDA, INDONESIA'S OWN AIRLINE. THE FOLLOWING 19 ARE STATED TO BE ALL CIVIL VERSIONS OF THE SHORT-HAUL AIRLINER.

(SINCE 1955, MORE THAN 350 FRIENDSHIPS HAVE BEEN BUILT IN HOLLAND OR UNDER LICENCE IN AMERICA AND SOLD TO AIRLINES OR PRIVATE OPERATORS. IN THE CURRENT SERIES OF FIVE PRODUCTION MODELS, ONE IS A MILITARY VERSION - F.27M - WHICH CAN CARRY 45 FULLY ARMED PARATROOPS OR 13,000 POUNDS (5,900 KGS) OF FREIGHT.)
