  • Description

INDIA'S TEACHERS WANT MORE MONEY. YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THEY HELD A MEETING OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT BUILDING IN NEW DELHI AFTER A PROTEST MARCH THROUGH THE CITY. THEY DECIDED ON THIS AFTER A LETTER SENT BY THEIR REPRESENTATIVES TO THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. SHASTRI, HAD NOT BEEN ANSWERED. AS THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN, THEY RECEIVED A REPLY FROM MR. SHASTRI - BUT IT WAS CONSIDERED TOO LATE TO STOP THE MEETING, TO WHICH PEOPLE HAD COME FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

THE TEACHERS WERE FIRST DEMANDING HIGHER SALARIES. THEY COMPLAINED THAT LOW SALARIES THEY WERE RECEIVING MEANT THAT PEOPLE WHO COULD WELL BECOME TEACHERS, WERE GOING ELSEWHERE IN SEARCH OF MORE MONEY. BUT THE DEMONSTRATORS ALSO ASKED FOR A UNIFORM SYSTEM OF EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. THEY URGED A TYPE OF CENTRAL CONTROL OVER THE WHOLE EDUCATION SYSTEM - AT PRESENT IN THE HANDS OF INDIVIDUAL STATE GOVERNMENTS.

THE TEACHERS ALSO DEPLORED THE FACT THAT SOME OF THEIR NUMBER WERE NOT ENTITLED TO OLD AGE PENSION IN SOME STATE. THEY HOPED THE CABINET WOULD LOOK INTO IT.

IN HIS LETTER TO THE TEACHER, MR. SHASTRI SAID THAT HE WAS SYMPATHETIC TOWARDS THEIR CLAIMS - BUT THE FELT THAT A MASS DEPUTATION SERVED LITTLE USEFUL PURPOSE, AND WOULD BE "OUT OF TUNE" WITH PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES.
