    THE 76-YEAR OLD PRESIDENT TOUCHED DOWN AT ORLY AIRPORT, PARIS, AT 4 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING (0300 GMT) AFTER FLYING FROM MONTREAL, AND WAS MET BY ABOUT TWENTY OF HIS CABINET MINISTERS, INCLUDING PRIME MINISTER GEORGES POMPIDOU.

    THE PRESIDENT HELD AN IMPROMPTU AND ANIMATED CONFERENCE WITH HIS MINISTERS AND LOOKED RELAXED AND CHEERFUL DESPITE THE STORM OF CONTROVERSY WHICH HE LEFT BEHIND IN CANADA AND WHICH FACED HIM ON HIS RETURN HOME.

    HE CUT SHORT HIS STATE VISIT TO CANADA ONLY FIFTEEN HOURS AFTER HE HAD BEEN GIVEN A PUBLIC REBUKE BY CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER LESTER PEARSON FOR HIS "FREE QUEBEC" SPEECH ON MONDAY NIGHT.

    MR. PEARSON SAID DE GAULLE'S "LONG MOVE FREE QUEBEC" CALL TO FRENCH-??? LEFT TO THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT AND ???.

    THE PRESIDENT LEFT MONTREAL LAST ??? ACCOMPANIED BY MINGLED CHEERS AND BOOS FROM THOUSANDS WHO WATCHES HIM LEAVE.
