    THE GAMBIAN INDEPENDENCE CONFERENCE OPENED AT LONDON'S MARLBOROUGH HOUSE TODAY (WEDNESDAY). THE BASIS OF DISCUSSIONS WILL BE THE PROPOSALS PUBLISHED LAST MONTH BY THE GAMBIAN GOVERNMENT, WHICH PROVIDE FOR INDEPENDENCE IN FEBRUARY NEXT YEAR. (1965).

    THE CONFERENCE WAS OPENED BY BRITAIN'S COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR. DUNCAN SANDYS, WHO SAID:
    IN REPLY THE GAMBIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. JAWARA SAID:
    GAMBIA IS ONE OF THE OLDEST, SMALLEST - AND POOREST OF BRITISH COLONIAL TERRITORIES IN AFRICA. GEOGRAPHICALLY IT'S A LONG NARROW ENCLAVE WITHIN THE REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL, WITH A TOTAL POPULATION OF 300,000. ITS FUTURE RELATIONSHIP WITH SENEGAL WILL BE ONE OF THE MAIN TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION DURING THE CONFERENCE. ACCORDING TO CONSTITUTIONAL PROPOSALS, THE QUEEN WILL BE REPRESENTED BY A GOVERNOR GENERAL; THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WILL HAVE 39-MEMBERS AND THE CABINET WILL CONSIST OF THE PRIME MINISTER AND NO FEWER THAN EIGHT MINISTERS.
