  • Description

At the Canadian Army's Officer Cadet School at Camp Chilliwack, a group of Tanzanian women are taking a seven-week course alongside Canadian women military trainees.

The Tanzanian women were taken into the Army after strong pressure from feminist groups, and were sent to Canada as part of the programme of Canadian military aid to Tanzania. The trainees are all between the ages of 18 and 23. When they return to Tanzania, they hope to be incorporated into President Nyerere's 10,000-man Army. Women are already in the ranks of People's Militia.

The wife of Tanzania's Prime Minister, Mrs. Sofia Kawawa, is the Chairman of her country's National Women's Organisation - and just four moths ago (July 24-31), hosted the All-African Women's Conference in Dar Es Salaam. More than 200 delegates from the 41 member states of the Organisation of African Unity (DAU) attended the Conference - which celebrated its 10th anniversary in the same venue where they came into being in 1962.
