  • Description

A new Radical Government, controlling 171 of the 300 seats in the Parliament, was sworn in at the Royal Palace, Athens, on Saturday May 17th.

Constantine Karamanlis, the last Premier of Greece, has resumed control, and with his Cabinet he went to the Palace, where the Archbishop of Athens officiated at the ceremony before the King of Greece. Sixteen Cabinet members were sworn in, an important and significant factor was the return of Mr. Evangelos Averoff to the Foreign Ministry. This re-appointment is taken as an indication of the Greek Government to pursue the same policy as before the general elections last week on the Cyprus question.

On leaving the Royal Palace Mr. Averoff had an hour long meeting with Archbishop Makarios, exiled leader of the Cypriot Ethnarchy------- the Greek Orthodox Church is Cyprus----.

It is understood that the new Government have had formal access to the text of the British statement of intentions elaborated at the recent London meetings between the British Government the British Ambassador to Athens, Sir Roger Allen, and Sir Hugh Foot the Governor of Cyprus.

While the British search for a path of compromise between the conflicting attitudes of the Greek and Turkish peoples on the trouble island, the Karamanlis Government is beset by a similarly difficult problem. The main opposition to this Government will be the extreme left-wing EDA party------these recent elections are the first since the last war in which pro-Communist elements have been permitted to contest-----which has taken and is intending taking steps to stir up 'Greek-Turkish antagonism by the West'.

It is this extremist group that will oppose any compromises for a settlement in Cyprus.
