    INTRODUCTION: Cricket - and England were in a strong position at the end of the second day's play in the Third Test against India in Madras on Saturday (15 January).

    SYNOPSIS: After resuming at the overnight score of 171 for 5, the tail-end batsmen aided by wicket-keeper Alan Knott added another 91 runs. Lever and Knott added 39 runs for the sixth wicket. Knott scored 45 before being caught by Viswanath off Bishen Bedi and Lever made 23.

    Derek Underwood contributed 23 runs to the England total before he was bowled by Prasanna with the score at 253 for nine. Roger Tolchard, who had retired hurt for one after being hit on the hand by a ball, came back at the end of the innings and added another seven runs.

    England's inning ended when Bob Willis hesitate about going for a run and was run out. The total was then 262 runs, more than England had hoped for when they were 31 for three on the first day.

    India's first innings started badly when Amarnath was bowled in the first over from Old and Viswanath was caught by Knott off Lever.
