SYNOPSIS: A group of 35 delegates representing 17 countries arrive in Calcutta on Wednesday for a first-hand tour of the Salt Lake City refugee camps. The group had flown from Delhi, after attending a three-day self-styled international Bangla Desh conference.

First stop for the visitors was the passport control office where the local Bangla Desh mission endorsed their documents.

After the official duties had been dealt with, the delegates drove straight to the refugee camps on the outskirts of Calcutta. They were greeted by a small demonstration ...

The refugees chanted for the release of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is being tried in secret in West pakistan for waging war in Bengal.

On Monday, other delegates attending the conference in Delhi had announced that they would attempt to cross into East Pakistan with documents issued by the Bangla Desh breakaway movement's offices in India. For the visiting delegates in Calcutta, it was a day of inspection tours and discussions with some of the younger refugees.
