  • Description

In a tour of districts on North Uganda's borders with the Sudan, the Uganda President, General Idi Amin, this week appealed for the maintenance of good relations with his country's northern neighbour.

Relations between Uganda and the Sudan became strained shortly after General Amin deposed President Milton Obote in January. General Amin maintained that pro-Obote guerrilla infiltrators were being trained in the Sudan's southern territories, and, in April, there were reports of several hundred people killed in border clashes between Uganda Army units and the guerrillas.

But the Sudan government has its own problems with anti-government forces operating from the South. And at the beginning of this month, General Amin announced that he was refusing to allow them to use his country as a base for their operations. Uganda, he said, wished to maintain good relations with the Khartoum Government. On Tuesday (15 June), he spoke of an amnesty for Ugandan supporters of Milton Obote who had received guerrilla training in Tanzania and the Sudan. If they wished to return, he said, no harm would come to them.
