  • Description

Israeli warships on Tuesday (29 May) steamed along the Suez Canal for the first time since the state of Israel was created thirty-one years ago. There Israeli landing craft headed a northbound convoy that included Egyptian, Soviet and United States merchant vessels.

SYNOPSIS: The four-hundred ton craft were the Achziv, Ashdod and Ashelon, all bound for the Israeli port of Ashdod from the Egyptian naval port of Sharm el Sheikh. Egyptian pilots came on board at Suez to move the new bilateral friendship another pace forward.

The passage of the landing craft came twenty-nine days after the first Israeli ship -- the freighter Ashdod -- steamed down the canal since the peace treaty was signed two months ago. Scores of Egyptians applauded, some shouting 'Shalom' the Israeli word for peace.

Sharm el Sheikh, their port of departure, is still occupied by the Israelis, but is to return to Egypt in the second, and last, stage of the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula. The withdrawal is expected to be completed within three years. Four days before this canal passage, Israel had returned the Sinai capital of El Arish to Egypt.
