    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAD RECEIVED MORE THAN 95 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST IN THE CYPRUS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS AT THE HALF WAY STAGE IN VOTE COUNTING TODAY (MONDAY).

    SO FAR, THE PRESIDENT HAS 113,234 VOTES COMPARED WITH 4,576 FOR HIS OPPONENT, DR. TAKIS EVDOKAS.

    YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) ABOUT HALF THE GREEK CYPRIOT ELECTORATE HAD CAST THEIR VOTES BY MIDDAY. THE ELECTION WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST SINCE CYPRUS OBTAINED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960. ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS WAS ELECTED IN PRE-INDEPENDENCE VOTING IN 1959 AND HE WAS VIRTUALLY ASSURED OF VICTORY IN YESTERDAY'S ELECTION.

    EVEN BEFORE POLLING GOT UNDER WAY DR EVDOKAS A 40-YEAR-OLD NICOSIA PSYCHIATRIST, ADMITTED HE HAD NO CHANCE OF WINNING BUT HE SAID HE WAS CONTESTING THE ELECTION TO "END THE ONE-PARTY STATE OF AFFAIRS IN CYPRUS AND ESTABLISH A STRONG OPPOSITION".

    UNDER THE ORIGINAL CYPRUS CONSTITUTION THE GREEK CYPRIOTS ELECT THE PRESIDENT AND THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS THE VICE-PRESIDENT. WHEN PRESIDENT MAKARIOS WAS ELECTED IN 1959 THE TURKISH COMMUNITY ELECTED DR. FADIL KUTCHUK AS VICE-PRESIDENT. DR. KUTCHUK WAS RE-ELECTED UNOPPOSED ON FEBRUARY 15 WHEN NOMINATIONS FOR BOTH OFFICES CLOSED.
