The Kenyan national soccer team, the Harambee Stars, saw their long-awaited hopes for winning the East and Central African Senior Challenge Soccer Cup dashed, when the defending champions Malawi scored the winning goal in extra time. It had been three years since the Kenyan team had reached the finals, and at half-time they were leading two-to-one. The extra-time score ended at three-to-two for Malawi, making them the second team to win the coveted cup two years in a row.

SYNOPSIS: From the kick-off, the defending champions Malawi, red, took hold of the game, in Nairobi City Stadium on Saturday (17 November). They scored in first goal when striker Barnet Gondwe netted from a high cross. Malawi have the kind of game that is said to be hard to follow, with three movements: fast, with the ball in their defence; rather slow in middlefield; but very fast upfront.

But, in spite of Malawi's touted well-balanced side, Kenya scores six minutes later when a corner kick by Vincent Otiend, was headed home superbly, by Charles Ochieng.

Just a minute before half-time Kenya pressing Malawi, went in front, two-to-one. Another corner from Otiend was headed away, but went straight to Jack Shikulu who scored with a low drive.

Many thousands of fans crowded the stadium, some coming from as far away as Malawi. The score held until the last minute of the game, when Malawi capitalized on a series of defensive errors, Mosted Siching took a corner kick and Jonathon Billie drove it home.

With the score tied at two all, the game continued with the champions exerting every ounce of their energy and skill. They scrambled a goal home, by Stock Dandize, to give the game and challenge cup to Malawi, for the second year in a row. The final score, three-two.
