  • Description

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto returned to Islamabad on Thursday (23 June) after visiting six Moslem countries in a five-day whirlwind tour. Mr. Bhutto was thanking the Moslem States for keeping out of his country's recent political unrest.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Bhutto went to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iran, Libya and Afghanistan. The Ambassadors to those countries were there at the airport to meet him. During the tour, Mr. Bhutto called for a defence treaty linking Moslem states. He also said the time was ripe for a third Islamic Summit -- the last one was held in Lahore, Pakistan three years ago -- and he suggested that plans should be devised to resolve disputes among the states.

Shortly after he arrived home, Mr. Bhutto resumed negotiations with the Opposition Pakistan Alliance (PNA) to resolve the country's prolonged political crisis. During his absence, problems developed. The Nine party Alliance claims the Government is putting a different interpretation on parts of a basic agreement reached last week on the lifting of the state emergency which has been in force since 1971.
