  • Description

Shipyard workers at Southampton are building a craft that's entirely new to Britain.

It's the first floating platform for deep-water oil drilling that's ever been constructed here. The "Orient-Explorer" has already been eight months in the making, and in another three it will be ready to start a long voyage, in tow, to Borneo. There engineers will use it to carry on the search for oil off-shore. When the barge is floating in a hundred feet of water it's drills will be able to bore as deep as twenty thousand feet below the sea bed.

With the first stage of the work complete the platform was ready to take the water; and the launching was as smooth as any big shipyard ceremony. Now that the "Orient Explorer" is afloat, there's more work to do on the superstructure, adding, among other things a landing platform for helicopters.
