  • Description

ITALY'S DRESS DESIGNERS SEEM TO BE GAMBLING ON DRESSES AND COASTS THAT PLUNGE TO THE MID-CALF "MIDI" LENGTH. ON THE OPENING DAY ON MONDAY (6 APRIL) OF FIVE DAYS OF ITALIAN READY-TO-WEAR AND BOUTIQUE SHOWINGS IN FLORENCE WHERE 90 FASHION HOUSES ARE PRESENTING AUTUMN AND WINTER 1970-1971 COLLECTIONS FOR ME AND WOMEN, THE PRESS AND HUNDREDS OF FOREIGN AND ITALIAN BUYERS APPLAUDED THE LONG LOOK. THE OCCASIONAL MINI-LENGTH DRESS THAT APPEARED WAS GIVEN ONLY PASSING RECOGNITION.

AMONG THE DESIGNS SHOWN AT THE HISTORIC PLAZZO PITTI WAS EGCUZQUIZA'S -- DESCRIBED AS A "FASHION WITHOUT FRONTIER".

BILLY BALLO'S DESIGNS WERE ALSO DISPLAYED AT THE SHOW, AS WERE THOSE OF OTHER FASHION HOUSES, SUCH AS VALDITEVERE, LA MENDOLA AND LIVIO DE SIMONE.

ONE EXPLANATION FOR THE PREPONDERANCE OF MID-CALF LENGTH CLOTHES WAS THE CONFUSION THAT STEMMED FROM LAST YEAR'S CHOICE OF MINI, NORMAL, MIDI DRESSES AND TROUSERS AS WELL AS THE FLOOR-SWEEPING MAXI. ACCORDING TO BOUTIQUE OWNERS AND DEPARTMENT STORE ACCOUNTANTS, WOMEN WERE UNABLE TO MAKE UP THEIR MINDS. DESIGNERS AT THE FLORENCE SHOW WERE ADMITTING THAT CUSTOMERS, UNWILLING TO GO ALL OUT FOR LONG LENGTHS IN CASE THEY DID NOT CATCH ON, BUT RELUCTANT TO APPEAR DOWDY IN SHORT-SKIRTED OUTFITS, DID NOT BUY AT ALL, AND SALES VISIBLY DROPPED.
