  • Description

Spain's main opposition parties met in Madrid on Saturday (4 September) to discuss ways of putting pressure on the country's government to speed up political reforms.

SYNOPSIS: About a hundred representatives of the Socialist, Communist, Christian Democrat ad Regional parties met in a Madrid hotel, without police interference. One of their main aims was to press for the legalisation of the Communist party. The other was to set up a commission or 'shadow cabinet' to negotiate with the two-month-old government of Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez. The parties want to ensure the transition to democracy is peaceful, after nearly 40 years of Fascist dictatorship by the late General Franco.

The group also wants a say in preparing new electoral law covering general elections to be held before June the 30th next year. They insist the Communist should take part.

One of the moves agreed at the meeting was the organisation of demonstrations throughout Spain to get wider political reforms. Delegates maintained the government had fallen back on reformist policies that have already failed instead of talking with the opposition. The demonstrations, which the group says will be peaceful, are aimed at forcing the government to break with Francoist institution, including the present parliament.
