Background: Boeing's newest commercial jetliner, the 757, is taking shape rapidly at the Boeing plant in Renton.Over the past several months, Boeing workers built the first wing which will lift the twinjet beginning in February 1980.In late August the wing was mated with the centre fuselage section and the airliner began to take form.The final fuselage join began on schedule (Sept.18) when the centre fuselage section and the wing were moved into position.The rear section of the first 757 was next moved into place and the airplane join process was nearly complete.

757 Director of Manufacturing, William E.Robison, explains the final body-join and highlights upcoming manufacturing events.The 178 passenger twinjet will provide the passenger with plenty of room for carry-on items - up to 180 pounds in each of the large overhead bins.

The new 757 flight deck will employ the latest state-of-the-art instruments which will help promote the most reliable, fuel-efficient flight possible.The 757 is slated for a January 1982 rollout with an extensive 10-month flight test programme expected to begin one month later.First deliveries of the twinjet will be in January 1983.The 757 is designed to be about 47% more fuel efficient than earlier 727 models.
