  • Description

A bomb planted in a car in a crowded Belfast street exploded injuring at least sixteen people on Wednesday (May 17). The street, in a residential area of the city, was filled with home-going factory workers--mostly Protestant. Several houses in the immediate vicinity were damaged.

Earlier in the day there was intense police and troop activity in the Roman Catholic Turf Lodge area, after three Protestant workers driving through the district on their way to work had been stopped and kidnapped. Some other men in the car escaped, but three were kidnapped and held captive in a coal cellar. They were finally released--and this film shows the men walking out of the cul-de-sac moments after their kidnappers had let them go with a "full pardon".

SYNOPSIS: A bomb exploded in a car in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday--injuring at least sixteen people. The car had been left in a crowded residential street, and the bomb went off as the road was full of home-going factory workers--mostly Protestant. Houses in the vicinity were damaged, but a police and troop search filed to find the bombers.

Earlier in the day, there'd been intense police and troop activity in another part of the city--this time, in the Roman Catholic Turf Lodge area, where three Protestant workers had been kidnapped. They were in a car driving through the area on their way to work, when they were stopped. Some of the men in the car managed to escape and raise the alarm, but the three kidnap victims were held captive in a coal cellar while police and troops searched for them--appealing to local priests and residents' associations for help.

Later the three men were released in a cul-de-sac--and a television crew in the area managed to film them waling out. Later, the men said their captors had asked if they belonged to the mainly-protestant police reserve. One said he'd been hit with a stick, but that they'd received a "full pardon" from their captors.
