  • Description

THREE NEW AMBASSADORS TO GHANA HAVE PRESENTED THEIR CREDENTIALS TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL (NLC), LIEUTENANT-GENERAL J.A.ANKRAH, AT THE CASTLE, IN OSU. THEY ARE ANDRE COULBARY, FROM SENEGAL, PIERRE ANTHONIOZ FROM FRANCE, AND HELMUT MULLER OF WEST GERMANY.

THE PRESENTATIONS WERE PRECEEDED BY THE INSPECTION OF A GUARD OF HONOUR FORMED BY THE SECOND BATTALION OF INFANTRY. THE FIRST TO ARRIVE M. COULBARY, MADE A SPEECH IN WHICH HE DESCRIBED THE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN GHANA AND SENEGAL AS NOT A RECENT FEATURE OF THE HISTORY OF THE TWO COUNTRIES. HE SAID THIS CO-OPERATION HAS BEEN MARKED, FROM ITS BEGINNING, BY THE DETERMINATION OF THE PEOPLES OF THE TWO COUNTRIES TO TRANSCEND ALL DIFFICULTIES IN ORDER TO SOLVE THEIR DIFFERENCES.

IN REPLY, GENERAL ANKRAH SAID GHANAIANS ARE PARTICULARLY DELIGHTED THAT THE TRADITIONAL ASSOCIATION BETWEEN GHANA AND SENEGAL HAD BEEN GIVEN GREATER STIMULUS SINCE THE NLC HAD COME TO POWER. HE SAID THIS CLOSER CO-OPERATION INCLUDED MANY FIELDS, ESPECIALLY IN EDUCATION AND CULTURE. THE NEXT TO PRESENT HIS CREDENTIALS WAS THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR.

    M. ANTHONIOZ SAID THE BONDS BETWEEN FRANCE AND GHANA DERIVED FROM THE NATURAL SURROUNDING OF GHANA, WHOSE NEIGHBOURS ARE ALL FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES. REPLYING, GENERAL ANKRAH SAID THE UNREALISTIC POLICIES OF THE NKRUMAH REGIME UNHAPPILY DISTURBED THE TRADITIONAL FRIENDLY RELATIONS BETWEEN GHANA AND HER NEIGHBOURS. HE SAID HE WAS HAPPY THAT GHANA NOW MAINTAINS THE MOST CORDIAL RELATIONS WITH ALL HER NEIGHBOURS.

THE WEST GERMAN AMBASSADOR, MR MULLER, THE LAST TO PRESENT HIS CREDENTIALS, SAID WEST GERMANS ADMIRE THE EFFORTS OF THE NLC TO SURMOUNT THE DIFFICULTIES WHICH STILL EXIST IN GHANA. HE SAID THE GERMAN PEOPLE WOULD CONTINUE TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SUPPORT GHANAIANS AS A PARTNER IN THE REALISATION OF THEIR GREAT GOAL.

GENERAL ANKRAH SAID THE REHABILITATION OF GHANA'S ECONOMY HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT, AND YET MOST REWARDING TASKS WHICH THE NLC HAS HAD TO UNDERTAKE. HE THANKED THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT FOR THE ASSISTANCE IT HAS RENDERED GHANA SINCE THE CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT.
