  • Description

The foreign ministers of Poland and West Germany met privately in Warsaw today (Wednesday, Nov. 4) for an hour and a half as negotiations continued to normalise relations between the two countries.

Immediately afterwards the West German minister, Herr Scheel, drove to the palace where the body of the Polish deputy foreign minister, Zygfryd Wolniak, was lying in State, and paid his respects. Mr. Wolniak was killed at Karachi airport, Pakistan, on Sunday (Nov. the 1st) when a baggage truck ran into a line of officials. He was given a State funeral today.

Herr Scheel and Mr. Jedrychowski met in a ground floor room of a small 19th century palace. Only their interpreters were present, and other members of their delegations waited upstairs. When the ministers rejoined their own delegates the full, 12-member negotiating teams spent almost an hour in session, then adjourned for the day.

The entire Polish delegation joined Polish Government and Communist Party leaders at the funeral of Mr. Wolniak. Three others were killed but the Polish president, Mr. Marian Spychaliski, escaped unhurt, in the incident at Karachi airport after he and his party had arrived for a brief visit.

Reports from Karachi say the driver of the baggage truck has told police that his action was premeditated. The man, Firoz Abdullah, has been charged with murder and attempted murder. He is due to appear in court on November the 16th.
