  • Description

RACIAL STRIFE BETWEEN INDIANS AND NEGROES AND A SUGAR CANE STRIKE HAS BROUGHT VIOLENCE TO BRITISH GUIANA, ON THE NORTHEAST COAST OF SOUTH AMERICA.

INDIAN SUGAR WORKERS HAVE BEEN ON STRIKE FOR ABOUT 10 WEEKS. THE STRIKE HAS INCLUDED A CAMPAIGN OF BURNING SUGAR FIELD, BEATING WORKERS, AND DESTRUCTION OF HOMES. THE MILLS, MANNED BY AFRICANS, CONTINUE TURNING OUT REFINED SUGAR, BUT ON A REDUCED BASIS.

AT A HINDU TEMPLE ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF GEORGETOWN, NARINE SADHU HAS BEGUN A 14-DAY PROTEST FAST ON BEHALF OF THE GUIANA ALL INDIAN LEAGUE, THE LEAGUE SAID IT HOPED SADHU'S FAST WOULD BRING ABOUT AND END TO ALL VIOLENCE.

IN THE MEANTIME, SIDNEY KING, AN AFRICAN LEADER, HAS BEEN CONDUCTING HIS OWN VIGIL FOR PEACE. HE STATIONED HIMSELF OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN GEORGETOWN FOR SEVEN DAYS, SLEEPING LITTLE AND EATING NOTHING BUT ORANGE JUICE. THE PURPOSE OF HIS PROTEST WAS TO GET GOVERNOR SIR RICHARD LUYT TO TAKE ACTION TO EASE THE SITUATION.

SO FAR, THE 1,200 BRITISH TROOPS HAVE REMAINED ON THE SIDELINE.
